What is ERROR:gender?

ERROR:gender is an artistic space for exploring bodies, sexualities, and genders through art, performance, conversation, and interaction. It is both a show and a space for sharing experiences, asking questions, and reflecting together.

We invite artists to contribute with performances, installations, sound works, participatory art, or other experimental formats that engage with themes of gender, identity, and body. The project takes place in The Hub, a dome-like structure that functions as both a stage and a meeting place, where audiences can participate at their own pace.

The project premiered in 2021 at the Arctic Arts Festival in Harstad, Norway. In 2025, ERROR:gender expands to Iceland, inviting new voices into the conversation.

Resources

The chosen artists each receive a fee of 1260 EUR including VAT. The fee includes 2 performance days with preparational work and 2 days of hosting in the Hub where you will be responsible for greeting and talking to the audience. The artists must be able to send invoices and the fee will be invoiced after completion of the performances.

Who can apply?

Artists living in Iceland can apply for this Open Call. We welcome artists from all disciplines who are passionate about exploring themes of gender, sexuality, and body in their work.

We are looking for proposals that:
✔ Engage audiences in different ways (visually, physically, emotionally, intellectually)
✔ Challenge or expand perspectives on gender and identity
✔ Encourage participation or create shared experiences

How to apply?

Fill out the application form with the necessary attachments here. Since the working language of ERROR:gender is English, please use English while filling out the form and make sure that the uploaded attachments are in English (however, the work you present at ERROR:gender can still be in Icelandic if you prefer).

Selection process:

A jury consisting of Eva Svaneblom, Jenni Kinnunen and a representative from Reykjavik Dance Festival will review applications and curate the program. All applicants will get an answer by the 15th of October.
